Meet Alterboy: The Duo Behind “What About Me” on Experts Only

With a sound that blends old-school vibes with modern energy, their upcoming release is already generating buzz across the globe. But who are these two artists, and how did their collaboration come to life? We sat down with the Italian duo to talk about their beginnings, inspirations, and the exciting process behind this highly anticipated release.
1. Take us back to where it all began. How did you two meet and start Alterboy Music together?
We already had some music projects with pretty good individual success in different styles. We met about five years ago through a recording studio based in Italy. We both wanted to do more club-oriented music, so we sat in the studio for fun and quickly clicked! During one of our first sessions, we were using a plugin called "Alterboy" from Soundtoys and said, "That's a cool name for a music project!" So, we decided to go with it, and that's how this new adventure started!
2. "What About Me" is about to be a massive hit as fans eagerly await its release on Experts Only this Friday. Can you walk us through the creative process behind the track? Anything from lyrics, synths, acid basslines, etc.?
We found a vocal sample from an amazing track from the '80s and brought a rough version of it to a studio session. After discussing it, we decided to try something different from what we were used to producing, aiming for the US market. We focused on making the drums sound old-school and analog but with a fresh twist. The half-beat bassline came to us almost immediately, and we experimented a lot with the vocals, synths, and other elements to keep the track interesting and cool. Honestly, it all came together pretty quickly; we were really inspired that day!
3. Every artist has their inspirations. Who are the artists or producers you look up to the most, and how have they influenced your sound and approach to music production?
We've always been fans of electronic music growing up, from Daft Punk to Avicii, Fatboy Slim, Armand Van Helden, and Disclosure. But we also love Motown, Queen, and Gaznevada. We listen to a lot of different genres, so it's hard to pinpoint who exactly influences our sound—it's probably a mix of all of them.
4. There are a few more days before this song is released to the public. How has it been working with John Summit and Experts Only? How did you find out he was interested in this track?
We’ve really enjoyed working with John and his amazing team; they’ve been incredibly supportive and clearly love the track. We sent the first demo a few months ago, and John immediately liked it. He started playing it around the world, and we were glued to his Instagram, watching for clips of him playing it! It was incredible to see the crowd's reaction every time. Eventually, he reached out to us on Instagram, saying he wanted to release it.
5. Do you guys have any upcoming shows this fall and winter season?
We are currently working on our fall/winter tour, and we are going to announce it very soon.
6. When you’re not in the studio or performing, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies or interests that might surprise your fans?
We like sports and to travel a lot, but honestly, we spend most of our time in the studio, haha!
