Artist Spotlight: Green Velvet

Who is Green Velvet?

Green Velvet is just one of the stage names for the wildly talented Curtis Alan Jones, who also goes by the alias Cajmere. Now who's who? And what's the difference?

Let’s take it from the start…

Curtis Alan Jones is a Chicago native, meaning he was most likely in the womb listening to house music. Jones began making music as early as the 1980’s, truly making him an oldie but a goodie. Jones goes by two different stage names, each persona evoking a completely different vibe and musical sound.

First off, we have Cajmere. Cajmere is widely recognized for his contributions to house music, particularly in the 1990s and early 2000s. Cajmere is known for tracks like "Brighter Days" and "Percolator," which became classics in the house music scene and are still circulating until this day. His music incorporates elements of Chicago house and techno, and he has been a prominent figure in the underground dance music community for many years.

Cajmere even decided to form his own label where he can release his music, Cajual and Relief Records. Under Cajual records, he released “Brighter Days”, which quickly rose to number two on the dance music charts. Safe to say, Cajmere’s music was an absolute hit. He even titled an album of his “Too Underground For The Main Stage”, broadcasting his goals. Cajmere was never aiming to be number one, he was aspiring to showcase his creative take on house music, which unintentionally led him to being a legend.

Now where does Jones’ alter ego, Green Velvet, fit into all of this?

Cajmere came to the conclusion that house music needed something new and funky just to shake and pop the house music scene up some more. So along came Green Velvet with the striking green mohawk.

Green Velvet has been producing music since the early 2000’s and arguably has experimented soundscapes that no other DJ has tread through. Shifting his sound with the times, Green Velvet has been able to remain a hot topic until this very day.

Green Velvet has played numerous sets with newbie John Summit and Dom Dolla. His music is simply one that does not age and only gets better as time goes on.

The story line of Cajmere and Green Velvet is truly an iconic one. Who knows what other tricks he’s got up his sleeve?
